New Zealanders must get it
Look how many women are presenting at this geek conference...Speakers | Webstock Web Conference. 6 of 16. Better than most tech events. (Plus they are way cool women!) Way to go, WebStock!

Thanks for noticing. It was a deliberate choice on our part to aim for approximately equal numbers - and there are so many superb women to choose from!
That's New Zealand for you - the place where it's always tomorrow. :-)
Cheers,
Miraz
(One of the organisers)
Nancy, it's good to keep pointing out these kinds of events. And Miraz's comment says it all: if you look for gender balance you can definitely find it.
But everytime I read about people "getting it" or "not getting it" I feel forced into an us/them split that doesn't seem helpful. I think the use of "it" for something as complex as gender balance, discrimination, etc. makes things too simple, too black/white.
What the heck is "it"? (I'm reminded of a game I played as a kid called tag "You're it!")
New Zealand's Central Bank is the first one to actually encourage complementary currencies. Not sure what it is, but it is wise.
Miraz, congrats!
Bill, you are absolutely right in my mind. As a woman who gets pissed off time after time at the lack of women presenters and participants at tech events, I do often feel it is an us/them issue. I feel that even more strongly when I fail to do a productive job of raising the issue with conference organizers (and I accept that I am half of the problem.)
So no, intellectually it is not black and white. Some days, emotionally, it feels that way. So onward we struggle!
